About Fibrebee

I'm Brenda, a fabric and mixed media collage artist based in North Carolina. I work in multiple mediums, which gives me the freedom to explore new techniques and experiment with different textiles.

My fabric collage work begins with cutting and tearing images from textiles and fabrics. My fabric of choice is hand-dyed linen. I layer these elements, collaging and appliquéing them onto a surface using both machine and hand stitching to build a textured image.

I also create paper collages using a variety of papers, including copy paper, tissue paper, packaging paper, and watercolor paper. I first paint the papers and then apply the pieces to canvas or wood cradled panels.

These images, like much of my work, are inspired by my travels to Europe and by the physical landscapes of the places I’ve called home: Chicago, Coastal Georgia, and Western North Carolina. I also draw inspiration from my love for gardening, flowers, and nature.

In addition to my artwork, I make handmade towels and cards with appliquéd designs that are stitched by machine using free motion stitching. This technique allows the stitching to become expressive and fluid, more like drawing with thread.

My work brings me much joy. I have always been a creator, and I need to be busy doing something or reinventing. I learned to sew when I was very young, and sewing and fabrics have always been an important element of my life. I love the texture of fabric and textiles, and I am drawn to the tactile nature of collage work, whether fabric or paper.

I participate in many art shows throughout the year in Western North Carolina. This is my way of connecting with people, sharing my work, and finding a sense of purpose through what I create. If you'd like to see my art in person, check out the list of show dates here
